Low water cutoff controls for boiler safety

Industrial steam and hot water boilers are designed with a minimum water volume requirement set by the equipment manufacturer. A low water cutoff (LWCO) device is positioned above the lowest possible water level of a pressure vessel, used to monitor the water level inside a boiler and shut off fuel or electrical power to the burner to cease combustion when the water level drops below a safe operating condition – also known as dry firing. A low water cutoff is a safety mechanism that can prevent internal damage or boiler explosion, and is one of the most critical pieces of equipment in a boiler system.

Low water cutoff design

Two primary device designs include mechanical-float LWCOs and electrical LWCOs. An electrical LWCO operates using a probe mounted in the boiler which uses the electrical conductivity of the water to determine water level safety. Mechanical-float LWCOs can become clogged from sediment (total dissolved solids, or TDS) and prevent the cutoff from working properly, and should be cleaned systematically through regular blowdown and cleaning.

Low water cutoff valve maintenance & repair

IB&M works with industrial clients every day to inspect LWCO equipment and test, maintain or repair as needed to ensure a safe operating environment. We check circuitry and proper cutoff, redundancy (secondary or auxiliary sensors) and alarms, and can clean and calibrate low water cutoffs as part of annual inspection to give optimal performance and lengthen the service life of this important equipment.

Low-water cutoff device failures are preventable, but a few signs of trouble can include:

  • Sediment buildup (rust, dirt, minerals, etc.)
  • Unexpected temperature spikes
  • Erratic boiler equipment behavior, rough operation
  • Poor maintenance or lack of documentation
  • Low blowdown frequency

IB&M can keep you out of hot water

Don’t risk boiler operator injury and equipment damage that low water conditions can potentially cause. Trust the boiler combustion experts to help you properly maintain low water cutoff devices for your boiler system.
